Master gardener training. What is a master gardener? A master gardeners receives about 50 hours of horticultural training taught by local gardening professionals; in return, MGs work as volunteers in their community, helping Virginia Cooperative Extension offices provide programs on home gardening. Virginia Beach, Portsmouth and Peninsula extension offices offer MG training each fall, once applications are received and reviewed during early summer. Other extension offices provide training usually starting in February. Contact your local extension office for information and an application.
