Message Board Contest Rules

TO ENTER: You must be 18 years of age and a resident of Virginia or North Carolina. To enter the Message Board Tip of the Week contest, post your tip on the Hampton Roads Gardening message board.  The contest begins March 26, 1999 and runs indefinitely.

By entering the contest, you grant the Daily Press permission to publish your name, entry and photograph for promotional purposes in connection with this contest. Be sure to include your name and e-mail address with your entry.

If two or more contestants remain tied following the tiebreaker, a random winner will be selected by the Daily Press.

The Daily Press has the sole right to determine the winners in all matters or disputes arising from the contest. The determination will be final and binding. There are no prize substitutions or cash equivalents permitted.

One winner per week will receive one of the following prizes:

  • Week 1:   Smart Yard: 60-Minute Lawn Care by Fulcrum Publishing (www.fulcrum-publishing.com, value $17).  Our Week 1 winner is Lynn Dean Hunter of Virginia Beach!  Lynn is a local Master Gardener and won for her gardening tip about propagating liriope from seed.
  • Week 2:   Green Gifts: How to Turn Flowers and Plants Into Original and Lasting Gifts by Fulcrum Publishing (www.fulcrum-publishing.com, value $28). Our Week 2 winner is Kemp Hux of Newport News!  Kemp won for the deer/camellia gardening tip.
  • Week 3:   Taylor's Guide to Growing North America's Favorite Plants by Houghton Mifflin (value $35).  Our Week 3 winner is William Freas of Newport News!  William won for the lawnmower care tip.
  • Week 4:   Two passes to Virginia Living Museum.  B. Manci of Hampton is our Week 4 winner for the Gerbera daisy tip.
  • Week 5:   Two passes to Norfolk Botanical Garden. Kim Grimshaw of Chesapeake is our Week 5 winner for the pepper on tomato plants tip.
  • Week 6:   The Woodland Garden by Taylor Publishing (www.hmco.com, value $30).  Rene' Richards, a master gardener in Suffolk is our Week 6 winner for her tip on how to ripen tomatoes in a brown paper bag.
  • Week 7:   Amazing Annuals by Firefly (www.fireflybooks.com, value $25).  Our Week 7 winner is Kris Dippre of New Kent County for her tip about using one of those multi-tiered metal mesh baskets to create a hanging herb garden in the kitchen.
  • Week 8:   Telescoping pole pruner by Stanley's new AccuScape gardening tool line (www.stanleyworks.com, value $30).   Our Week 8 winner is Steve Waddell of Suffolk!  Steve won for his water garden sealant tip.
  • Week 9:   Two passes to the Virginia Living Museum.  Our Week 9 winner is Darlene Levy of Newport News!  Darlene won for her tip on how to keep deer away from plants.
  • Week 10:  Two passes to Norfolk Botanical Garden. Our Week 10 winner is Judi Ruben of Chesapeake!  Judi won for her tip on drying onions in panty hose.
  • Week 11:   Growing Seeds, Starting from Scratch by Fulcrum Publishing (www.fulcrum-publishing.com, value $12.95).   Our Week 11 winner is Rene Calvert of Newport News! 
  • Week 12:   Encyclopedia of Ornamental Grasses by Timber Press (www.timberpress.com, value $50).  Our Week 12 winner is Debbie Bradshaw of Suffolk!  Judi won for her tip of putting gardening catalogs in her husband's bathroom so he will start reading about and become interested in gardening.
  • Week 13:   The Plantfinder's Guide to Ornamental Grasses by Timber Press (www.timberpress.com, value $35).  Our Week 13 winner is Sherri Bernard of Hampton!  Sherri won for her tip of using carpet over the ground and around plants to suppress weeds.
  • Week 14:   Two passes to Virginia Living Museum.  Our Week 14 winner is Donald Durham of Newport News!  Donald won for his tip about free water for yard visitors.
  • Week 15:   Two passes to Norfolk Botanical Garden.  Our Week 15 winner is Judi Ruben of Chesapeake!  Judi won for her tip about painting the top of tree stumps with paint to prevent them from sprouting again.
  • Until mid-January, our gardening tip winners will receive tickets to the Virginia Flower & Garden Show, Jan. 21-23 at the Virginia Beach Pavilion.
  • Week 16:   Our latest winner is Aaron Zeno Seaford (York County)!  Aaron won for his tip on how to protect a lettuce or seed bed from pests. He wins tickets to the Virginia Beach Flower & Garden Show.  Congratulations, Aaron!
  • February 2000:   Winged Weeder by Creative Enterprises (www.wingedweeder.com ) (value $20).  Sherry Lewis of Newport News wins the Winged Weeder by Creative Enterprises for her gardening tips about rooting a woody stem cutting in a bottle of water.
  • March 2000:   Folding pruning saw by Stanley (www.stanleyworks.com, value $20).  Peggy Watters of Saluda wins the folding pruning saw by Stanley for her gardening tip on how to use drinking straws to make flowering bulbs so you know where they are when you want to plant more bulbs.
  • April/May 2000:  Three-piece handtool set by Stanley (www.stanleyworks.com, value $20). Joann Marshall of Hampton wins the three-piece handtool set for her online gardening tip about pruning cascading shrubs such as weigelia and forsythia.
