AMERICAN ROBIN AT A GLANCE NAME: American Robin
FAMILY: Turdus migratorius, thrush family
COLORS: 10-inch bird has slate gray back, brick-red breast, white eye ring, streaked
white throat and yellow bill. Male's head is darker gray than its back; female is paler
overall. Babies have spotted breasts.
VOICE: Cheer-o-lee, cheer-o-lee song by male.
HABITAT: Rural and urban areas, lawns, parks, woodlands and fields.
NEST: 3-5 blue-green eggs in cup of mud reinforced with grass and twigs, lined with
softer grasses and placed on a ledge or windowsill. Usually have two broods each season.
RANGE: Maine to Carolinas on East Coast.
FOOD: Loves earthworms, also insects, berries and other fruits. May eat fruit, suet or
peanut butter mix placed on or near ground.
HELPFUL PLANTS: Favorite is hackberry. Also likes serviceberry, barberry, bittersweet,
dogwood, Russian olive, holly, Eastern red cedar, Southern magnolia, pyracantha and other
berry-producing plants.
