Soil testing

Send a sample to Virginia Tech for analysis

PROBLEM. Can you give me the phone number or address of the Virginia Cooperative Extension so I may purchase the soil testing kits? - e-mail

SOLUTION. Those soil testing kits are great because you mail the sample off to Virginia Tech and the university sends you back an analysis report that tells you what the pH or acidity level of your soil and what nutrients are needed. Your local extension office also gets a copy of the analysis so it can answer any questions you may have regarding the report. Cost: $7.

Fall with its warm soil and weather also is a good time to till lime and soil-improving organic matter into your vegetable garden plot. Then you're ahead of the game come spring.
